Wayne [Coyne of Flaming Lips] still spent hours painting, sometimes creating surreal fantasy scenes in the style of Frank Frazetta -- "You'll see some of the girls in those paintings with long black hair that look just like me, except he always drew gigantic boobs on them," Hali [his former girlfriend circa 1980] said [..].

From a book I'm reading now: Staring at Sound: The True Story of Oklahoma's Fabulous Flaming Lips by Jim Derogatis (p. 13). There's a reproduction of one of those Frank Frazetta-inspired paintings on the same page as well. Please leave a comment if you want me to scan it.

This book looks at the Burlesque's Queen in hotel rooms across America. Lucy Fur's two major pursuits - photography and professional exhibitionism - meet up advantageously in the setting of odd American hotel rooms. Equal parts Bettina Rheims, Helmut Newton and Cindy Sherman, Lucy Fur has begun a photographic career by capturing herself in a vanishing breed of unique motel room environments across the US.

Writes Lucy in her introduction, "Room With a View is not merely a pin-up book: it is as much about the room as it is about me. I think of myself as a fixture in that room, like a lamp or a chair. The kind of motel rooms that particularly attracted me had wood panelling, forgotten '60s- and '70s-era oil paintings, strange lighting, fantasy themes, tiled bathrooms, wacky wallpaper, and no outside view. All the photo-graphs are in some way a reaction to the established lexicon of 'pin-up sexy.'"

Room With a View contains nearly one hundred of Lucy Fur's photographs, bound handsomely with an inlaid photograph surrounded by an elegant embossed cloth binding.

So what shall we call these new hard-core paintings? Will “postporn” do? “Sublingual”? “Pre-op”? [..] Perhaps Currin is really a feminist who decided, even at this late date, to expose the “male gaze” once and for all, like Stanley Kubrick with Eyes Wide Shut. Or perhaps he is just another sexist pig who refuses to admit that he’s trying to keep this subject matter in male hands. Or perhaps he is simply making fun of his own penchant for Courbet. Or perhaps he really gets off on painting porn.

To mark this exhibition, Gagosian Gallery has published a comprehensive monograph of Currin's paintings, drawings and related source materials from 1988 to the present. I had this book in my hands today and I went into my Top 3 Wish-list immediately. A very sexy item, from the shiny plastic covering to the exciting photos within.
